How Did We Do It?
Assessing Your Needs and Planning:
In this project our client had the remnants of a gravel driveway in Penngrove, CA which appeared to be constructed years ago. The gravel appeared to have deteriorated and washed away over the years. In addition it appeared that there wasn’t any road stabilization geotextile fabric installed initially as there was excessive vegetation growth through the roadway. We worked with our clients to give them the best value without exceeding their project budget.
Choosing the Right Gravel:
After discussing the various options with the client we decided on using a class 2 3/4” minus crushed stone. This material allows for a solid drivable surface with good compaction qualities. The class 2 road base is a very suitable material for a roadway.
Preparing the Site:
We prepared the site by removing excess vegetation and soil which had made its way to the surface of the road over time. The client wanted the removed debris relocated to a different location on their property. Following that we graded the base so that we would be prepared for the installation of stabilization fabric and gravel.
Installing Geotextile Fabric:
With the approval of our client we began the installation of a geotextile stabilization fabric which assists in the roadways durability and longevity with the following attributes;
- Increase stability of gravel
- Reduces potholes and ruts
- Prevents loss/mixing of surface gravel with soil base
Adding Gravel:
After the Geotextile fabric installation we began adding the 3/4” gravel with fines. After speaking with our client about the proposed budget we decided on 4”-6” of gravel on top of the fabric through out the driveway.
Compacting the Gravel:
After spreading the gravel we used a drum rolling compactor to both compact the sub layers of gravel and create a smooth finished product. The compactor was used several times during installation to compact the new roadway surface in layers.
Regular Maintenance:
While gravel driveways require less maintenance than other driveway materials, routine upkeep is necessary to maintain their appeal and functionality. Regularly remove debris and leaves using a leaf blower or broom, as they can contribute to weed growth and deterioration. Periodically inspect the driveway for any signs of rutting or unevenness, addressing these issues promptly to prevent further damage. Assess and water on the roadway, ensure rainwater is being diverted away from the roadway and is draining off of the roadway surface appropriately.
Conclusion:
Building a gravel driveway in Penngrove, CA, can be an excellent investment which not only enhances your property’s aesthetics and but also its functionality. We hope to help you construct your new gravel driveway or improve your existing gravel driveway in the near future. We hope to be working with you soon!
